S.salivarius is the first bacterium to colonize dental plaque. The bacterium is a species of spherical, gram positive bacteria and is known to inhabit the upper respiratory tract a few hours after birth. Cell structure
As S.salivarius is a gram positive cocci, this would mean that it would stain purple in a
gram stain. S.salivarius has a length of about 2um in length. Formation of pairs and short chains usually occurs. The bacterium are facultative anaerobes and are either non or alpha hemolytic on blood agar. Fimbrae are composed of proteinsub units which have ranges of 2-8nm in diameter, these are hair like appendages. Fimbrae are involved in th co aggression of .salivarius.
